IloveperformingandIloveteachingandthemediumofachoir
allowsmetodothemall,”heenthuses.
Hehadoriginallysuggestedtheystartabrassbandbutbecauseof
theirlocationinLimpopo,farfrombigcityJohannesburg,itwould
havebeendifficultfortheteachersandtrainerstoregularlyaccess
anddevelopthem.
Thechoirbecametheobviouschoiceaspartoftheorphansand
vulnerablechildren’sprogramattheNdlovuCareGroup.
ThehorrificHIVpandemichadleftmanyorphanedandthe
programwasmeantasahealingcurriculumforthecommunity.It

becamesosuccessfulthatwhenitcamefortheparticipantstoleave
school,theywerenotwillingtoleavetheprogramastheywere
unabletofindemploymentoraffordsecondaryeducation.
Schmittsaysthusanideaoftransformingthechoirintoa
platformtogenerateanincomeforunemployedyouthwasborn.
Today,thechoirboastsabout40membersandincludesa
jobcreationprogramfortheoldersingerswhodomostofthe
performances.
Thechoirhasalsostartedahomeschoolingprogramforlearners
–afull-timetutortravelswiththemlocallyandinternationally.
“Whenweturnedprofessionalin2018,ittookaboutsixmonths
togetusgoing.IcalledafewpeopleIknewintheindustryand
bookingswerecominginslow,”recallsSchmitt.
“WeneededaproductandthearrangementwedidofaZulu
versionofShapeOfYoubyEdSheeran,brilliantlytranslatedby
SandileMajolaandSiphoHleza,wentmassivelyviralonsocial
mediaandhad25millionviewsandthatgotthenation’sattention
and that was the first time we got serious publicity and bookings

themprowessandpraise.
SowhenanopportunitycametomeetthematpopularSouth
AfricanrestaurantNando’sinthesuburbofLorentzvillein
Johannesburg,duringalauncheventlastmonth,Iseizeditwith
convictionandmycamera.

Thechoir’sco-founderandchoirmasterRalfSchmittstartedfrom
thebeginning,abouthowhegotinvolvedwiththegroupattheopening
oftheamphitheaterinthevillageofMoutse.
Whatstartedoutasamissiontoservethecommunityendedup
becominganevengreaterforce–ontheworldstage.
“ThisisthesamevillagethatraisedtheNdlovuYouthChoir
poweredbytheNdlovuCareGroup.Thegroupwasdoingamazing
workwithHIVawarenessandtreatmentintheearly2000sand These young people can be the
theamphitheaterwasbuiltforthecommunitytogather,receive beacons of what’s possible in a
informationanddodramaworkshopsaroundHIV/AIDS.” rural community.
Schmittwascontactedtodomusicfortheopeningin2008
becauseofhistrack-recordintheindustry,ashewasalso part of the – Ralf Schmitt
internationally-renowned Drakensburg Boys’ Choir.
