A massive stretch of water
separated from the sea by sand dunes
and beaches, this lagoon is a haven
for wildlife, such as sandpipers and
egrets. The freshwater lake is around
5 km (3 miles) long and surrounded
by lush vegetation (see pp20–21).
Kastanitha Cave, Paxí

Kastanitha cave is one of Paxí’s most
striking natural features. Lying on
the northwest coast near Lákka, the
180-m- (590-ft-) tall cave is a fabu-

Mount Pantokrátor,

Mount Pantokrátor, whose name
means “the Almighty”, dominates
northeast Corfu. It rises so steeply
that its peak, at over 900 m (3,000 ft),
is less than 3 km (2 miles) away from
the coast. A mountain road with a
series of hairpin bends leads to its
summit, which affords spectacular
views in every direction (see p64).
