are rocky and bare, but some have

         A massive stretch of water
separated from the sea by sand dunes
and beaches, this lagoon is a haven
for wildlife, such as sandpipers and
egrets. The freshwater lake is around
5 km (3 miles) long and surrounded
     by lush vegetation (see pp20–21).

Kastanitha cave is one of Paxí’s most
     striking natural features. Lying on
the northwest coast near Lákka, the
     180-m- (590-ft-) tall cave is a fabu-
lous sight as you approach it by boat. Road winding up Mount Pantokrátor

                                  Corfu
                              Mount Pantokrátor, whose name
                              means “the Almighty”, dominates
northeast Corfu. It rises so steeply
that its peak, at over 900 m (3,000 ft),
is less than 3 km (2 miles) away from
the coast. A mountain road with a
series of hairpin bends leads to its
                              summit, which affords spectacular
views in every direction (see p64).
