If you mess with Twister, you mess with his family. This whirling space tornado is some 3 billion miles (5 trillion km) long and is born from extremes of hot and cold inside his mother, Lagoon Nebula. She’s an interstellar cloud of gas, dust, and plasma and a nursery for new stars. Plasma blasting out from these baby stars sometimes creates massive stellar jets—shock waves that can travel light-years.
