When it opened in 1897, the Brooklyn
Museum building, designed to be the
largest cultural edifice in the world,
was the greatest achievement of New
York architects McKim, Mead & White.
Though only one-sixth of the building North facade of the museum, designed by McKim, Mead & White
was completed, the museum is today one of the
most impressive cultural institutions in the United
States, with a permanent encyclopedic collection
of some one million objects, housed in a grand
