8 Bronx Zoo
Opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo is the largest
urban zoo in the United States. It is home to
more than 4,000 animals of 500 species, which
live in realistic representations of their natural
habitats. The zoo is a leader in the perpetuation
of endangered species, such as the Indian
rhinoceros and the snow leopard. Its 265 acres
(107 ha) of woods, streams, and parklands
