TURKEY
Ölüdeniz
This small resort, at the foot of 1,969m
Babadag mountain, is a global magnet for
SIV students and acro pilots. Launch from
one of five launches (at 1,200m, 1,700m,
1,800m, 1,900m and 2,000m) and by the time
you’re over the ocean you could still have
over a mile of air between you and the water.
The drive up takes 45 minutes, but there
are plans for a cable car that will link (by
2020) the summit with the main road outside
town. A new chairlift already connects the
main launch at 1,700m with those further up.
Expect both launch and landing to be busy,
and ensure you have a lifejacket and a rescue
boat if you’re flying manoeuvres. You’ll also
need to register in town to get your pilot’s
card and pay a small national park fee every
time you bus it up to launch. For all the
essentials, including shuttles, contact one
of the many tandem operators in town. Sky
Sports has a good reputation.
