A German sentry keeps watch in the wake of
a failed British cavalry attack. After the i nal
offensives of the Somme in November 1916,
both sides set in for a harsh winter on the
battlei eld. When the weather improved,
the British began operations along
the Ancre, gradually pushing
further into German
territory.
