Central Canal Ring

Amsterdam’s Golden Age canals, Herengracht,
Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, are at their
most impressive in this central section of the
Grachtengordel (see p15), which culminates in the
stretch known as the Golden Bend. This is where
the wealthiest Amsterdammers built stately
houses in the 1660s, often purchasing more than
one plot. One of these opulent houses, Het
Felix Meritis, Grachtenhuis, is now a museum, tracing the
from the canal history of the construction of the canal ring. The
intimate cross-streets that run between these three canals, De
Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets), enticingly display the city’s
talent for creative retail. Cutting through this elegant district is
the main thoroughfare, Leidsestraat, which leads to the brash
and lively entertainment hub, Leidse plein.
