It is impossible to travel through Banff National Park and not feel
awestruck. The sublime Rocky Mountains soar over a landscape of
glimmering glaciers, evergreen forests, swift rivers flowing through
lush valleys, and the some of the bluest lakes on earth.

The best known of the Rockies’ national parks,
Banff was also Canada’s first. The park was
established in 1885, after the discovery of
natural hot springs by three Canadian Pacific
Railway workers in 1883. Centuries before the
arrival of the railroad, Blackfoot, Stoney and
Kootenay peoples lived in the valleys around
Banff. Today, Banff National Park covers an area
of 2,564 sq miles (6,641 sq km) of some of the
most spectacular scenery in the country. Some
four million visitors a year come through the
town of Banff and the village of Lake Louise to
enjoy a range of activities, including caving,
rafting, and hiking in summer, and tobogganing, Downtown Banff during a
dog-sledding, and ice-climbing in winter. summer rainstorm
