        The literal and spiritual heart of Quebec City, Place-Royale is a quaint,
        cobblestoned square that witnessed the birth of New France. Lined
      EXPERIENCE  Quebec City  explorer Samuel de Champlain built the city’s first structure in 1608.

        Of all the squares in Canada, Place-Royale
        undoubtedly has the most history. Samuel de
        Champlain, the founder of Quebec, is thought
        to have planted his garden on this site, and the
        French colonial governor Frontenac turned it
        into a market in 1673. A bust of Louis XIV was
        installed in 1686, and the square was named
        Place-Royale. Today it remains much as it did
        in the 17th century, exuding an air of elegance
        and delicate grandeur. The steep-roofed
        houses with pastel-colored shutters were once
        the homes of wealthy traders, but the square   The colorful rooftops and
        declined during the 19th century. It is now fully   stonework of buildings near
