New Arrivals and Prosperity
The impact of the Klondlike gold rush led to the expansion of
cities such as Vancouver and Edmonton, while the new central
Canadian provinces provided a home for many European immi
grants eager to farm large tracts of land. By 1911, new immigrants
had doubled the populations of the new provinces. Finally
Canada began to profit from a prosperous world economy and
establish itself as an industrial and agricultural power.
World War I
Canadian troops were the heroes of two major battles in Ypres
(1915) and Vimy Ridge (1917). After the war, the country gained
recognition as an independent country, winning representation
in the League of Nations. This independence was confirmed in
1931 with the passing of the Statute of Westminster, which
