       1 Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace)

       Defensive installations or castles have stood on the island
       of Stadsholmen ever since the 11th century. The Tre Kronor
       (Three Crowns) fortress was completed in the mid-13th
       century, but during the following century it became a
       royal residence. The Vasa kings turned the fortress into a
       Renaissance palace, but this burned to the ground in 1697.
       In its place the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger
       created a new palace in Roman style with an Italianate exterior   . Changing of the Guard
