Richardson disliked the original flat façade of
Trinity Church, and so modeled the deeply
sculpted west portico after St. Trophime in
Arles, France. It was added after his death.

Phillips Brooks
Born in Boston in 1835 and
educated at Harvard, Brooks
was a towering charismatic
figure. Rector of Trinity
Church from 1869, he gained
a reputa tion for powerful
sermons. From 1872 Brooks
worked closely with Henry
Hobson Richardson on the
Main design of the new Trinity
entrance Church – at least five sculpted
likenesses of him can be seen
in and around the building.
