Exploring Hampshire and
Salisbury Plain
The counties of Hampshire and Wiltshire offer a great range of scenery. In eastern
Hampshire, country lanes wind along wooded valleys, such as those of the Test and
the Itchen, and weave between villages and unusual features such as the sudden
ravines of the “Hangers”. Southampton, Portsmouth and their
neighbouring coastal towns make up the region’s most Cirencester
populated area, from where ferries run to the Isle of Wight. South
The nearby New Forest is much loved by walkers and Cerney
pony riders. Further north, the majestic spire of Tetbury Cricklade Highworth
Salisbury Cathedral can be seen from the rolling
grasslands of Salisbury Plain, on which stand Malmesbury
the prehistoric sites of Stonehenge and Badminton Swindon
Avebury. In the northwest, the downs Wootton
