1 The White House
In 1791 George Washington chose this site as the location
for the new President’s House, and Irish-born architect James
Hoban was selected to design the building. In 1800, President
and Mrs. John Adams became the first occu pants, even though
the building was not yet completed. Burned by the British
in 1814, the restored edifice was occupied again in 1817, The White House
