Actually hexagonal in shape,
the Octagon is a three-story
red-brick building, designed
in the late-Federal style by Dr.
William Thornton (1759–1828),
first architect of the US Capitol.
The Octagon was completed
in 1801 for Colonel John Tayloe
III, a rich plantation owner from
Richmond County, Virginia, and
a friend of George Washington.
When the White House was
burned in the War of 1812
