16 INTRODUCING CUBA
UNITED
Putting Cuba on the Map STA TES OF
AMERICA
Washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the
waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba is the largest island in the
Greater Antilles, situated just south of the Tropic of Cancer.
THE
It lies only 180 km (112 miles) from Florida and 210 km BAHAMAS
(130 miles) from Mexico, while Haiti and Jamaica are slightly less
than 80 km (50 miles) and 140 km (87 miles) away, respectively.
Cuba is not a single island, but a varied archipelago with a total
surface area of 110,922 sq km (42,815 sq miles). Lying on an east-
west axis, the main island, the elongated Isla Grande, is about
1,250 km (776 miles) long and 100 km (62 miles) wide on
average. Around it are five archipelagos: Colorados, Sabana,
Camagüey, Canarreos and Jardines de la Reina, consisting of
thousands of cayos (keys and small islands). The largest minor
island is Isla de la Juventud. Cuba has about 11 million inhabitants,
2,500,000 of whom live in Havana, the capital. J a r d i n e s d e l R e y
