shady courtyard.
The Fondation Maeght was established in 1964 by Cannes art
dealers Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, who numbered the
likes of Chagall, Matisse and Miró among their clients. Their
private collection formed the basis of the foundation, and
they enlisted the help of their artist friends when designing
the grounds: highlights include a courtyard filled with stick-
thin Giacometti sculptures, an elaborate sculpture-filled
maze designed by Miró, a bold swimming pool by Braque
and a large mural mosaic by Chagall. The Maeghts intended
the foundation not as an art museum, but as a forum to
present modern art – a place for artists to gather, exchange
ideas and exhibit their work. Today, just a fraction of the
vast permanent collection is on display
at any one time, with a changing
programme of popular
temporary exhibitions.
