                               Tips for summer water safety

Never let children swim without adult supervisiOn – even if they are confident and
able swimmers. Children drown silently and quickly – in a matter of minutes.

Make sure the adult supervising isn’t dISTrACTed. In 90% of cases where a child has
drowned, he or she was under some sort of adult supervision at the time.

Make sure you have layers of bArrIerS around your pool. A fence and a safety net
                should be installed.
Go on a CPr course – even knowing only the basics can make the difference between
                life and death.

Invest in swimming lessOns for your child – it’s a great way to get exercise and
                teaches respect for the water.

Make sure you have pOOl rules: never swim without an adult present, don’t run around
the pool, always jump in feet first, and so forth.

teach children about density by finding out which objects sink and which float.

Sink or this will give them a better idea of why they need to swim in order to stay afloat.

float? Fill a bucket with water and have your child try various objects out to see what
happens. Talk about the results. Here’s an explanation you can use:

“whether an object sinks or floats depends on its density; how tightly packed its molecules
are (molecules are tiny particles that can only be seen with a microscope). It has nothing
to do with size – something very large could float (think of a raft) and something small could
            sink (like a coin).”
                                                       Craft!
                                                                            Make a boat

                                                 * Cut out some sails from paper, like the example in
                                                     the picture.

                                                 * Use an elastic band to secure three or six
                                                     corks together.

                                                 * Use a toothpick to skewer through the sail where
indicated, then push the end into the corks, as shown.
