92 ❯❯ Copenhagen Area by Area
Christianshavn and
Holmen
After the Inner City, this settlement on the island of Amager is
the oldest part of Copenhagen. In 1521, Christian II invited Dutch
gardeners (whom he held in high regard) to this fertile area to
plant and run market gardens. A century later, Christian IV built
fortifications in the area and a town on an island at the north end.
The canals of Christianshavn, lined with houseboats and pretty 17th-
century houses, are a charming attraction. Holmen to the north
consists of three man-made islets and was created in 1690 as a
naval base. After the navy left in the late 20th century, the area
saw an increase in public spaces, housing and art and design
schools; it is also home to the city’s impressive Opera House.
