r Glacier Bay National Park
The 5,000-sq mile (13,000-sq km) area surrounding CANADA
Glacier Bay was designated a National Park in 1980 ALASKA
and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in
1992. Historically, the park has served as an open-air
labo ratory for studies on the recolonization of formerly
glaciated lands by plants and wildlife. For visitors, Glacier Area of map Glacier Bay

Bay is best known for its tidewater glaciers and deep
fjords, and is also a popular destination for wildlife
enthusiasts. Its forests and alpine areas are home to Gulf of Alaska
bears and mountain goats, while in the summer, its Locator Map
waters are alive with migrating hump back whales.
Although most visitors take an organ ized cruise, Glacier Bay National Park
kayaking is also an enjoyable option.

. Fairweather Range
The forbidding Fairweather Range, which culminates Cape Spencer
at the 15,300-ft- (4,590-m-) high Mount Fairweather, Cross Sound
was the source of the ice that created the park’s deeply
indented fjords. The range continues to feed the glaciers
on the western peninsula of the park.
