Putting Alaska on the Map
Flanked by the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, separated Ar ctic
from Russia by the Bering Strait, and bordered by Ocean
Canada in the east, Alaska lies across the Arctic Circle.
Covering over 586,400 sq miles (1.5 million sq km)
and with just 735,000 people, it is the largest and least Barrow
densely populated US state. Almost half of all Alaskans Beaufort Sea
live in Anchorage, while the rest are concentrated Wainwright
around Fairbanks, Southeast Alaska, the Mat-Su Valley, Prudhoe Bay Kaktovik
and the Kenai Peninsula. The spectacular landscape, Deadhorse
dotted with national parks, is dominated by glaciers, Point Lay
Umiat
rugged mountain ranges, island chains, broad Colville Inuvik
river valleys, and wide coastal plains.
