THE BRIGHTON BOMBING
In October 1984, the IRA bombed the Conservative
Party conference in an attempt to kill prime minister
Margaret Thatcher. Five died and dozens were
injured, but Thatcher escaped injury. The IRA warned
her “we only have to be lucky once.”
DEATH ON THE ROCK
AND IN BELFAST
The IRA plot to bomb the changing of the
guard in Gibraltar in March 1988 backfired
as three volunteers were gunned down
by the SAS. The subsequent funeral saw
further chaos as a loyalist gunman attacked
the ceremony, killing three.
