          When did
          we stop

          saying “four
          and twenty”
          instead of
          twenty-four?

          Jacqueline Harris
In written and spoken English, it seems
that ‘twenty-four’ has been much more
popular than ‘four and twenty’ since at
least 1800, and the same goes for the
two versions of most other numbers.
The ‘four and twenty’ form originally
comes from the German (‘vier und
zwanzig’) and survived into the late 19th
century in legal and academic texts,
but also, ironically, in novels where the
speaker was rural or uneducated. It
hasn’t completely died out, though. In
parts of Norfolk and Shropshire you will
still hear people tell the time as ‘five and
          twenty past.’

           Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of
           Penzance (1879) used both “twenty
eight” and “nine and twenty” in the
           same song
