e The High Coast
Sweden’s spectacular high coast is best experienced on
a light summer evening, when the wooded hills are
reflected in the calm waters of the bays, or on the quay
in Ulvöhamn during the surströmming season (see p259),
when the peculiar speciality of fermented herring is
enjoyed with flat bread, tiny potatoes and snaps. A boat
is ideal for getting around, but the Höga kustenbron
bridge provides easy access and ferries sail regularly
from several ports. The dramatic landscape is the main Skuleskogens National Park
attraction. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Watched over by Skuleberget hill, the
park covers 30 sq km (12 sq miles) of
2000, it is the result of the land rising 300 m (984 ft) since wilderness, with walking trails through
the ice receded around 9,600 years ago. At that time magical ancient forest and over the
Skuleberget hill, north of Docksta, was a tiny island. clifftops along the coast.

Motorists on the E4 rejoin the Gulf of Bothnia at Ullångersfjärden
