STRANGE BUT TRUE! 53
Freaky flora The Nepenthes pitcher plant,
Monkey cup
which grows in Australia,
Madagascar, and Southeast
Asia, is known as the “monkey
cup” because monkeys like the
fluid inside its pitchers. Insects
fall into this carnivorous vine’s
tropical trap in pursuit of
nectar—but end up getting
eaten themselves.
Hanging bangers
The Kigelia africana,
or Sausage tree, can be
seen across Africa’s wetter
regions. This whopper of a
species reaches 66 ft (20 m)
in height, with strange
sausage-like fruits up
to 35 in (90 cm) long.
