       Architects McCarter and Nairne
       described the Marine Building
as “a great crag rising from the
sea.” Their design, built in 1929
in an extravagant Art Deco style
       near the waterfront, cost its
       Toronto developers $2.35
       million before they went broke.
       The 25-story buff-brick tower,
       meant to house Vancouver’s
       marine-related businesses, was
       sold in 1933 for a mere $900,000
       to Ireland’s Guinness family.
         This now-beloved office
       building has seen $20 million
       worth of restoration and repair
       since the mid-1980s. Outside
