Page 353 - Tagalog for Beginners: An Introduction to Filipino, the National Language of the Philippines
P. 353

Maaari mo bang isulat/sulatin... Can you write...
Puwede mo bang basahin... Can you read...

What is the difference between maaari and puwede ? Both words mean the
same thing. Maaari, being an indigenous Tagalog word, however, can seem to be

more formal. In recent times, puwede seems to be used more often in everyday
                 life.

Hello? Is this the front desk?
             CLERK : Oho.

                      Yes.
PEDRO : Sira ho ang aircon ko.

                      My air conditioner is broken.
CLERK : Sandali lang ho. Paakyatin ko ho ang technician namin. Baka puwedeng
                         ayusin.

Just a moment. I will ask our technician to go up. He might be able to fix it.
PEDRO : Puwede ho ba akong lumipat ng kuwarto?
                      Can I change rooms?

CLERK : Kung hindi ho maaayos, puwede kayong lumipat sa Room 1240.
If it is not fixed, you can move to Room 1240.

             PEDRO : Salamat.
                      Thank you.
