PHOTO STORY EMPEROR PENGUINS
ABOVE On a well-trodden path,
adults walk from Snow Hill Island
colony to the open ocean to stock
up on another meal for their
hungry chick. When they’ve had
enough of walking, they propel
themselves along on their bellies.
RIGHT On sea ice, temperatures
can drop to -50°C, with winds of
150km an hour. Penguins survive
with relative ease, maintaining a
body temperature of 38°C. Their
success in this environment is
helped by their streamlined shape,
with head, flippers and feet relatively
small in relation to the body.
