Pretty
Woman: so
good we
almost peed
our pants
WE FELL FOR THIS
PRETTY WOMAN
Originally planned as a gritty drama about drug
addiction called $3,000 – the amount Vivian (Julia
Roberts) is paid by Edward (Richard Gere) – if Pretty
Woman got made today, it would probably be more
indie film than rose-tinted romcom. But we’re forever
grateful that this shoulder-pad-heavy Cinderella
story, first released in the US in March 1990, made it.
OK, so it turns prostitution into a fairy-tale romance,
but Pretty Woman is still one of the most memorable
Julia Roberts movies of all time, making her a star in WORDS NICOLA FAHEY. PHOTOGRAPH GETTY IMAGES
Hollywood after a host of others, including Sandra
Bullock and Sarah Jessica Parker, declined the role
first. Big mistake. HUGE. (Well, for them anyway.)
