796 PHR ASEBOOK
Phrase Book
India has 18 major regional languages, many with their own scripts. While Hindi, spoken by 30 per cent of the
people and widely understood throughout India, is the official national language, other languages enjoy
predominance in their respective regions. Our phrase book covers five languages, four of them spoken in
India’s four largest cities and their surrounding regions: Hindi (spoken in Delhi); Bengali (spoken in Kolkata);
Marathi (spoken in Mumbai); and Tamil (spoken in Chennai). The fifth language, Malayalam, is spoken in
Kerala. While Hindi, Bengali and Marathi are Indo-European languages, descended from Sanskrit, Tamil and
Malayalam are Dravidian languages, unrelated to the Indo-European group, though influenced by Sanskrit
over the centuries. English is widely spoken and understood throughout the country and serves as a link
language between the different regions. One can get by with English almost anywhere in India, but most
Indians are delighted and warmly appreciative if a visitor makes an attempt to speak their language.
