The cave paintings of
Lascaux in France, are
thousands of years old
and show a number of
different animals who
lived during that time,
including aurochs.
In 1493, explorer Christopher Columbus set out
on his second voyage to the New World. His mission
was to populate any lands he discovered and to claim
them for Spain. He took seventeen ships and more
than a thousand men to establish new colonies.
Columbus also took cows and other animals to the
Western Hemisphere. The Spaniards and their ani-
mals settled in many islands, including Puerto Rico,
Guadeloupe, Hispaniola, and Cuba.
