                        PARIS UNDER WATER
The French capital came to a halt when the River Seine burst
its banks. During the Great Flood, as it became known,
the water rose eight metres above its normal level and
thousands of Parisians were forced to take refuge in
makeshift shelters. Wooden walkways were built to
enable movement through the city, and many
travelled by boat. The cost of the damage was
estimated at 400 million francs, today
equivalent to more than 1 billion euros.
