4 The Personal
History Of David
Copperfield
Cert PG, 119 minutes, #87
in cinemas 24 January
Starring: Dev Patel, Peter Capaldi,
Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie
Director: Armando Iannucci
THE PLOT Southern England, the
mid-19th century. Young David
Copperfield (Patel) suffers mixed
fortunes – including a spell living with
his donkey-obsessed great-aunt
(Swinton), a stint at boarding school,
and various encounters with a serially
impecunious debtor (Capaldi).
WHAT’S RIGHT WITH IT? Armando
Iannucci (The Death Of Stalin)
brings a playful approach to the
1850 Charles Dickens doorstopper,
which extends to colour-blind
casting throughout the film.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH IT?
Fans of traditional Dickens
adaptations should look elsewhere.
VERDICT Skilfully compressing the
book’s meandering storyline, while
also fully exploiting the text’s comic
potential, Iannucci delivers a lively,
fresh-feeling Dickens. And Patel once
“I wish I was more again provides a vital asset – nobody
like Mobeen” does hapless quite so endearingly.
