Defining

The great cause
After the death of King Alexander III of
Scotland, the country found itself in the
middle of a succession crisis. As a respected
European monarch, Edward was called to
adjudicate a dispute but instead tried to exert
his control over the Scottish crown and bring
it under his domain, leading to the Scottish
Wars of Independence and helping
to foster an intense rivalry along
the border.
1291
“A warrior through and through, much of
Edward’s reputation comes from his
various campaigns in England, Wales,
Scotland, France and the Middle East”
