               The Rose of Turaida
               According to a popular legend, in 1601 a young
               orphan girl found in the aftermath of a battle
               between the Swedish and Polish armies was
               named Maija and raised in Turaida Castle. She fell
               in love with Viktor, a gardener from Sigulda Castle.
               One day a deserter from the Polish army
               lured Maija into the nearby Gūtmaņa Cave under
               false pretences, but she tricked him into killing
               her rather than surrendering her chastity. The
