The oldest and most beloved of Lithuania’s national parks,
Aukštaitija National Park was established in 1974 to protect
local biodiversity. About 60 per cent of the country’s plant Area of the Ignalina
species can be found here, in addition to ancient pine map illustrated
forests, fort-hills, burial mounds and old thatched cottages
in villages such as Salos II. Palušė makes an ideal base for
exploring the 400-sq km (154-sq mile) park. The park’s central
point, Ladakalnis Hill, is its highest, from which five lakes are Key
visible. Rowing boats can be hired from Palušė, enabling Aukštaitija National Park
visitors to make a circular trip or drift at a leisurely pace
along the water trail.
