In an interview with Entertainment
4 4 eekly, director J.J. Abrams

chose the name BB-8 because he looked
round and bouncy, saying, “I named
him BB-8 because it was almost
onomatopoeia… It was sort of how he
looked to me, with the 8, obviously,
and then the 2 Bs.”
Bill Hader of Saturday Night Live and
Ben Schwartz of Parks and Recreation
fame helped create digitally altered
sounds for BB-8’s voice, and are
credited as “vocal consultants”.

Captain Phasma’s name and chrome
armor were a tribute by director
J.J. Abrams to the 1979 horror
movie, Phantasm. In fact, Abrams’
company Bad Robot recently oversaw
a 4K restoration of the cult classic,
which was written and directed by
Don Coscarelli.
