Many creatures need a safe

place where they can shelter,

sleep, or raise young. In the

endless variety of the animal

world, an ideal home could

be a cave, a colony, a nest,

or even another animal’s

discarded shell.

A hermit crab does not grow a shell of its
own and has to protect its long, soft body
using the empty shell of another creature.
As the crab grows, it moves to a larger
shell. Sometimes, crabs fight over the
best shell to make their new home.
