GROWING AND BREEDING 147
Although big animals eat a lot,
small creatures usually eat
more for their size because they
burn energy quicker. The speed
at which an animal consumes
energy is known as its
metabolic rate. The pygmy
shrew’s is 50 times faster
than an adult human’s,
so to fuel its body the
shrew eats constantly.
An average adult
human weighs
62 kg (137 lb), so
a person eating
125 per cent of their
body weight in
food (as much as
the shrew) would
devour 77.5 kg
(170 lb) a day.
