Creature combat
Many animals face a fight for survival.
Within their own species, they spar
to win the affections of a mate, prove
dominance, or take over territory.
Hippopotamus
Aggressive by nature, hippopotamuses come well-
equipped for conflict, with large tusks and gaping
jaws. These African giants battle each other to
establish dominance within a group, the winner
often causing the other serious injury.
Red kangaroo
These Australian marsupials
are ever ready to deal a
knock-out blow. Dominant
males grapple and kick
with their powerful
legs and sharp claws,
scrapping over
potential mates.
Komodo dragon
Reptiles can turn rivals during mating
season. On Komodo Island, Indonesia, male
dragons fight for a female by hissing loudly
before wrestling together. The winner is
decided when one is overpowered by
the strength of the other.
