On the highest peaks of the Serra de Sintra stands the
spectacular palace of Pena. Built in the 19th century
for Queen Maria II’s flamboyantly creative husband,
Ferdinand Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, it comprises
an eclectic medley of architectural styles.
The bright pink-and-yellow walls of the palace
stand over the ruins of a Hieronymite
monastery, founded here in the 15th century.
Ferdinand appointed a German architect, Baron
Von Eschwege, to build his dream summer
palace, filled with international oddities and
surrounded by a park. Construction started in
1840, and the extravagant project would Kitchen, where
ultimately last 45 years – the rest of the king’s the dinner
