of the artist’s most recognised works weave their way
throughout guest rooms and public spaces. Another
mammoth, 50-metre mural decorates an adjacent
laneway, a collaboration between Matt and
a local Indigenous artist. Signature experiences include
art tours, in-room art channels and art libraries.
There are interconnecting studio suites for families,
as well as courtesy cars and Lekker bicycles for guests
to explore the city. The hotel’s Hyde Perth Kitchen +
Cocktails boasts a cool outdoor pool, sun lounges and
DJ decks – a WA first for the Hyde brand, known for its
celebrity-packed venues in Los Angeles and Miami.
              Roaming with Romeo

Travel has changed a lot for Matt since the birth of his
son, Romeo, now 14 months. But with Matt often
working on commissions from sunrise to sunset,
having his young family accompany him on location
depends on where and what he’s working on, to
              minimise disruption to the toddler.
Romeo is an excellent traveller, says Matt: the family
has just returned from a two-month holiday through
Greece and Italy, where Romeo was in his element as
he noshed on Nutella-filled croissants, woke up next to
the gorgeous beaches of Greece and southern Italy,
and enjoyed the warm welcome of the Mediterranean
people, all keen to interact with the adorable tot.
Of course, art also plays a huge part in Matt’s travels.
Heavily influenced by the chiaroscuro of Renaissance
painters, a highlight was visiting Caravaggio’s most
famous paintings in churches throughout Rome. That
said, “The best part of my work is the experiences and
the education I receive from the people I meet,” says
Matt. “It has taken me on a journey that I never
expected and has completely changed my life.”
It should come as no surprise that Matt’s greatest
travel desire is for Romeo to experience the
communities that most inspire him, his son having
already joined him on one pilgrimage to a remote
Indigenous community where, says a grinning Matt,
“he gained a lot of new aunties and uncles.”
