Out of this world
Continuing north, and proof that every town has a story to
tell, Carnarvon was not only the first place in Australia to
grow bananas but also has a famous space station that
played a pivotal role in the early space race. Many of
NASA’s leading astronauts have paid their grateful dues
here, including Buzz Aldrin.
Our final stretch of road north takes us to our end
destination of Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef. Postcard
moments are aplenty in these parts, with blue waters that
are home to a prolific amount of coral, fish and, in season,
majestic manta rays, whale sharks and humpback whales.
We snorkel at Coral Bay, but opt for an off-grid experience
further north, glamping at Sal Salis in Cape Range National
Park. Our reward? Long stretches of Ningaloo all to
ourselves. At Turquoise Bay, its beaches wearing “best in
Australia” tags, and the equally beautiful Sandy Bay, we
spend days spotting whales and drift snorkelling the reefs
in waters that look more like Windex than sea. When the
winds pick up, we kayak Yardie Creek to spot the elusive
black-footed rock wallabies, also spying osprey nests
nestled into cliff faces and sites with evidence of human
life dating back 32,000 years.
The traditional owners of this land, the Jinigudira of the
West Thalandji people, have forged life in synergy with the
land and sea. For visitors to this remote region, it is a rare
privilege to share it and learn their stories.
