Aboriginal History
&
Cultural Development
SkillsLink Training is proud to bring you the first of our programs in Aboriginal History and Cultural Development with Uncle
Bill O’Brien and Mr John Brownsberger. This course will be open to all ages and cultures, and it will cover broad aspects of
the pre-European History among Aboriginal people in the Mid North Coast, as well as the Colonial Settlement period and
developments in Cross-Cultural Relations ever since up to the modern day.
With decades of experience in Aboriginal Community Cultural Development, and being
Chairperson of the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council, Uncle Bill O’Brien is perfectly placed to
guide learners on this journey towards better understanding of our local and national history, and
moves to create opportunities for Indigenous young people through education and entrepreneurial
development.
John Brownsberger is a retired University Lecturer, having lectured at James Cook University
in the School of Australian Indigenous Studies for over seven years. John also lectured at the
University of Sydney on Racism whilst undertaking his Honours degree.
Now a well known, multi-skilled teacher at SkillsLink, John has also run a class for several
years in Aboriginal Affairs at the University of the Third Age. He is passionate about creating
deeper understanding among all Australians of the complex history prior to and since European
settlement.
This is a unique opportunity to learn from two experienced educators.Workplaces are increasingly requiring staff to
undertake Cultural Awareness Training, and this course fully covers all the required aspects of Cultural Awareness and
Cultural Responsiveness. SkillsLink works closely with Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) and Bunyah LALC to
further the opportunities for all members of the indigenous communities of the Mid North Coast.
