“Yes. It was imbedded in his transverse cervical nerve. We’re still not sure how it got there. There
was absolutely no sign of incisions anywhere other than one on his midriff. One of his Adrenal
gland’s showed signs of being examined” Ida answered.
“I see!” Barbra said as she examined the object more closely. She jumped back when the end of a
filament flexed. “Jeez! What?!!” She exclaimed.

“Ah; did it twitch again. You’re not wearing a quartz wristwatch by any
chance?” Ida asked. Barbra looked at her wrist; indeed she was wearing a
Quartz watch, and an expensive one at that. “It reacts to the minute fields
given off by equipment in the Gigahertz bands. Or so our lab tech found out
by accident. Scared the proverbial out of him too.” she added
“It almost made me embarrass myself. That’s freaky by anyone’s standards.
The level of sophistication in this is… Well; beyond anything known. The
circuitry appears to be on a Pico scale. Who would have the resources to
create something like this? I… I can’t even think why they would. I understand a second device was
found in the girl; have you got that one?” she asked
“No unfortunately. When that one was removed and exposed to the air it vaporised!” Ida answered
“That’s a pity. What’s more frustrating is I’m not going to get any chance to examine it further.
When’s Markham due?” Barbra commented and asked
“Douglas Markham is overdue; he should have been here about an hour ago, he called to say he’s
stuck in traffic on the M25. He doesn’t think he’ll get free of the snarl up for at least another hour.
That gives you just enough time to get some Electron micrographs and some MRI scans I believe” Ida
smirked. Barbra and she headed off to the Biographic department.

Arthur was sitting up in bed enjoying a cup of coffee and some walnut cake.
He had the TV on and was watching the news. There was an almighty mess of a jam
on the M25. Helen walked back in as they were showing the twelve vehicle pile-up
in a panning shot.
“Good grief. How did anybody survive that mess? It means I’m going to have make a
substantial detour to get back home to Greenwich for Mum’s Birthday bash tomorrow. I probably
won’t arrive until around midnight.” She said disappointed by what she was seeing.
“Some students on a Rag week thing caused it with their fake UFO and costumes. The motorist at
the head of the line slowed so his passenger could get some photo’s on his phone. The drivers
behind weren’t as quick to react and it was shunt after shunt from there on. Apparently one of the
cars was carrying some government Walla. The police and Emergency services were on the scene
pretty quick. The crazy bugger wanted to get a lift from the Air Ambulance crew. He was headed
here apparently” Arthur regaled, but she hadn’t been listening. She’d spotted something in the local
newspaper she’d brought for him from Ludgershall.
“Arthur; Do you remember the name of the lane you had the “incident” on?” she asked
“Crawlboys… yes that’s it Crawlboys Lane. Why?” he asked
“A huge crack has appeared in it about fifty feet wide. Happened overnight! There’s been smoke
pouring from it all day.” she replied…

                                                  The Gifts of Youth
A month later Lance was at Lunaris Edo as he’d said to his friend. The Exchange Programme
he was part of had researchers in all fields swap locations for spells of up to six months between
various facilities. He’d successfully completed his stint on his home world of Mira and had been
seconded to do further historical research and Index Collating on Lunaris. Fortune seemed to be
favouring his side research into the “disappearances” as Francine referred to them. He quite liked
“Abductions” which sounded more ominous. He was just headed to the Shuttle Imbris Locus when
his portable coms bleeped. It was a call from Lars.
