Okay, so maybe they don’t write
eight million words a minute, but
the shorthand form of writing does
help you write faster. “Shorthand is
a method of writing faster. You
learn symbols for letters and words
i to increase your speed,” said Joyce
Roeschke, advanced shorthand
Linda Schaefer
Speech therapist teacher.
According to Roeschke, there are
two main advantages to taking
shorthand. One is that you learn the
skills necessary for a secretary, and
the second is it helps you with
grammar and notetaking.
Twelve people have taken shor
thand this year, and Senior Teresa
Nickisch is one of them. Her main
reason was, “I was interested in

career deuelopment typing, assistant Nickisch also said she planned
on using shorthand after she
counselor sophomore class,
color guard sponsor graduates and becomes a secretary.
The class particpated in a pen
pal project with a beginning shor
thand class in Crete, Nebraska, in
which they wrote letters back and
forth in shorthand. Roeschke feels
the project was successful because
the students “really got to know
each other.”
Besides the project, Nickisch felt
the class as a whole was successful.
She said, “You learn more and

have more fun with your peers.”
