A familiar scene in many high schools
and college campuses at springtime
looks something like this: Students
sitting in a classroom, their heads bent over
the papers in intense concentration (and
probably intense exhaustion too from stay
ing up all night burning the midnight oil
studying), trying to recall all that they’d
learned in the past year. These students are
taking—what else?—final exams.
Ralston High scheduled two days of final
exams at the end of the second semester,
which may make cramming for tests a
familiar site from now on. The advent of
final exams has brought a mixed reaction
from the student body.
Junior Kerry Hokomoto is one student
who doesn’t like the idea. Said Hokomoto,
“I don’t think finals are good because you
have to take them on the last week of school,
when nobody wants to concentrate.”
Hokomoto raised another issue. “You
have to stay at school even though you don’t
have a final in that class. That’s a waste of
time and stupid.”
Sophomore Regina Hadfield agreed with
Hokomoto. “I don’t think we should have to
take finals because nobody before us had to.
The freshmen will have to take them for four
years, and the seniors didn’t have to take
any.”
One junior said, “It’s hard because they
told us about them so late. It’s going to be
difficult to cram a whole year into a few
weeks’ worth of studying.”
Still, on the positive side of the issue, the
duty of the high school is supposed to be to
prepare students for college. And final ex
ams are a big part of college academic life.
Said Senior Susan Lee, “I only had one final
throughout my whole high school career,
and I don’t know how I’m going to be able
to handle them in college. I can see some
advantage to taking finals.”
Advantages or disadvantages, final exams
are about to become a part of the Ralston
High academic day.

Underclassmen
Immediately after the Class of ’86 |cft the halls of
Ralston High, the Class of ’87 took command.
Juniors Heidi Hazuka and Monika flegcris flaunt
their class spirit by decorating a sheet with the
175 Underclassm en Division names of all the students in the new senior ifcjass.
