The winter season of 1934 produced another victorious track
team equaling last year’s in performance. The squad went through
the season undefeated. Under the leadership of Captain Don Batty
it tallied a total of 175!, points in four dual and triangular meets,
with an additional 47 points in two large interscholastic contests.
Our strongest events this winter were the 40-yard dash and
the 45-yard low hurdles. Whitaker, Bowditch, Spelt, and Tinker
were the mainstays in the dash; while Schwarz, Bowditch, and
Tinker easily took care of the hurdles. Syren ran an undefeated
season in the 1000. In every race he was closely followed by Joe
Wild. The 300-yard dash was also a strong point-winner. Ed Whitaker remained supreme in
this event, with good support from Tinker and Spelt. Capt. Batty continued his fine work in
the 600; Williams and Norton gave him good backing up. Bill Myer and Kenny Clapp starred
in the high jump. The shot-put, although comparatively weak, brought in a goodly number of
points won by Lindholm and Ostrom.
The winter season opened with a smashing victory over Noble and Greenough, 43-20. We
took six out of the seven first places and showed from the beginning the power that was ours.
The next meet resulted in an easy win from Tabor Academy, 44-19. A clean sweep was
made in the 40-yard dash with five other firsts. In this meet Bowditch pulled a tendon in his
thigh, an injury which put him out of competition for the rest of the season.
The B. A. A. meet followed with a very successful outcome for the several men who en
tered. Whitaker led the relay team, consisting of Wild, Tinker, and Syren, to tie for first place
with Worcester Academy. Captain Batty was out with a cold. Schwarz took a second in the
hurdles, and Myer was eliminated only at the six-foot mark in the high jump. The boys took
                      fifth place with 74 points.
Dean Academy was next swamped by the team, 504-12d. Clean sweeps in the 40- and
300-yard dashes started us toward victory.
The triangular meet with Central High School and LaSalle Academy brought us another
overwhelming win. In spite of the keen competition, we took four first and five second places.
Here the best event was the 1000, in which Syren outstripped the field, with Wild taking third.
The New England Private Schools meet was a fitting climax for a victorious season. The
opposition was strong, but the boys piled up 394 points for an easy first. "Ed" Whitaker won
first honors in the 40- and 300-yard dashes. Bill" Myer set a meet record in the high jump at
5' Ilf". Captain Mitchell's last year’s record in the hurdles was equaled by a tie between
Tinker and Captain Hood of Tabor. Syren ran a beautiful race in the 1000 to win by a large
margin. Captain Batty was barely beaten by Hanlon of Roxbury Latin.
The prospects for this spring are very fine. A close victory over Central High School,
64-62, shows that the team as well as being strong in the running events, is well supplied with
good field men. Among the best are Myer, Wild, Tinker, Lindholm, Smith, Clapp, Maclsaac,
and Hall. Outstanding in this meet was Myer’s javelin throw of 156' 9", which broke the
school record set eight years ago by Fred Swan. This victory over Central represented the
School’s nineteenth out of twenty-one dual and triangular meets in the last three years.
                                                                                                 S. L. W.
