AFC/Nicaragua Facts
Amigos for Christ, an international nonprofit organization based in Buford, GA,
began at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in 1997, when youth leader John Bland
and a friend, Gary Caprara, traveled to Chinandega, Nicaragua, looking for a
service project for the high school students.
Hurricane Mitch struck Central America on October 30, 1998. Almost 3000 people
were killed around Chinandega, Nicaragua, and entire villages disappeared under
volcanic mudslides. Since then, AFC have strived to settle and sustain these
displaced families in safe, healthy communities.
Nicaragua is situated in Central America, bordering Honduras, Costa Rica and the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Nicaragua has been marked by continuous upheaval,
in the form of corruption, foreign intervention, war, rebellion and natural disasters.
Its capital city, Managua, was damaged twice by earthquakes (1932/1972).
